What Is PickleBall?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that was invented in Washington State in 1965 by 3 buddies.  They were worried their children would be bored all summer and used concepts from Tennis, Ping-Pong and Badminton to create, what is now, the fastest growing sport in the United States.  There are more than one stories on how the sport got it's quirky name. Click here for a more robust history of the game.
In 2018, 3.3 million people actively played the sport.
  • The paddle is basically a highly engineered over-sized ping pong paddle
  • The ball looks like a heavy duty whiffle-ball
  • The court is the same size as a badminton court--20'x44'
  • The height of the net is 34" tall in the center
  • You can play either singles or doubles
  • Matches are typically played to 11 points and you must win by 2
  • You serve diagonally cross-court to your opponent
  • Points can only be won by the serving team
  • There are 7ft on either side of the net, commonly referred to as the kitchen, that you may not volley the ball directly out of the air
    • If the ball bounces in the kitchen you can step in and play it and then step back behind the line
  • Pickleball pairs extremely well with craft beer
